DAWSONVILLE – Home games are always special, but playoff home games are the pinnacle special. Dawson County’s football Tigers have experienced home playoff games for three consecutive years and took advantage of that advantage in a 49-14 rally victory over the Hart County Bulldogs on Friday night. Dawson now posts a 3-2 record over that stretch, but will now take it on the road for the Sweet 16.
The cold Dawson evening would witness another stellar rushing attack with 388 total yards led by Sevaugh Clark’s 276 yards to his accompany three touchdowns. Senior quarterback Coey Watson would add another 78 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Watson would also pass for 131 yards and a touchdown.
After a cumbersome start for both offenses with two 3-and-outs and fumbles on their initial two possessions, the offenses finished a strong first quarter. The Tigers marched 54 yards on their third drive with Watson scoring his first from the one yardline at the 4:47 mark to take a 6-0 lead. The two-point PAT failed for the Tigers.
The Bulldogs then found their groove and claimed their only lead with a strong passing attack as Luke Lee connected with Jalen Brown for a 13-yard TD with 57 seconds remaining in the first. After the PAT kick, Hart had the Tigers down 7-6.
The Tigers responded with a 3-yard Clark score with 11:35 on the second quarter clock to take a 12-7 lead that would be un-relinquished.
With the response responding, the Tiger defense went into storm trooper mode and started taking over the game. The defense led by strong front line pressure, intense linebacker play and tight secondary coverage would produce eight plays with a loss or no gain, two interceptions (Logan Brumbelow, Noah Brock), a second fumble recovery (Jason Velasquez and Brody Howell), a safety (Daniel Brock)and force four more punts by Hart.
Over that stretch Dawson would build a 26-7 lead, 19-7 at the half, behind an additional rushing score by Watson and the Watson to Ryan Glass 49-yard strike.
Hart would make one last run at the Tigers after they assembled an 83-yard third quarter drive that ended with a 5-yard scoring pass to cut the score to 26-14 with 4:22 remaining in the third quarter.
Dawson answered that score with another Watson rushing score and a 23-yard Clark score to open the final quarter. With Clark approaching the 200-yard rushing mark again, he would break away on a 79 yard touchdown run with 10:07 remaining. Dawson finished off the night with Daniel Brock sacking Hart’s Anderson, forcing a fumble that was recovered for a safety with 3:55 remaining in the game.
Dawson will go on the road for the second round against Cedar Grove.
