NORCORSS – The talent pool for the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans proved to be at a higher level than the rest of Region 7AAA for the second consecutive year. The Spartans completed their sweep of the region on Friday night with a solid 49-10 win over Dawson County.
In GAC’s run for the 2017 title, the Spartans outscored region opponents by a combined 327-44.
The opened Friday’s title game performance by scoring on four of their first five offensive possessions with a balanced attack, mostly behind a powerful run game led by Clemson bound Kylar McMichael who finished the night with 139 rushing yards on five carries and two touchdowns.
Leading 28-0 with 5:09 to go in the first half, the Spartans added a score off a blocked punt in the end zone, then added a pick-six off a tipped pass with 2:52 remaining in the half to build a 42-0 margin.
Dawson assembled their first scoring drive of the night off strong running by Sevaughn Clark and Coey Watson. The most successful drive ended with Clark rushing in for a ten yard score with 25-seconds remaining in the half, 42-7. On the ensuing drive, GAC’s McMichael finished the Spartan scoring with a one-play, 70-yard score to set up the 49-7 halftime score.
Despite the lack of scoring production for the Tigers, Clark pounded out 96 yards in the first half, on his way to a 111 yard rushing performance. Tonight’s performance pushed Clark over the 1400 yard rushing mark for the season which is the second best single season rushing tally in Tiger football history behind Neal Cain.
Dawson opened the second half with a balanced drive that stalled in the redzone, resulting in a 32-yard Peyton Allen field goal to set up the final 49-10 tally.
The Tigers finish as the Region 7AAA runner-up for the second consecutive season and will host their third straight opening round state playoff game on November 10 against Hart County.
