COAL MOUNTAIN – The road to Georgia Tech, site of the Class AAAAAAA state title game, continues tonight for the North Forsyth Lady Raider basketball team.
The Lady Raiders will host Hillgrove in a top-10 battle at Raider Arena in the quarterfinals of the Class 7A playoffs. Hillgrove advanced with a 65-60 win over Campbell last week. It’ll be the second meeting of the second between the two teams. North beat Hillgrove 55-53 in OT on Nov. 21 in the Thanksgiving tournament at Raider Arena.
Last week, Catherine Shope scored 21 points and Caroline Martin had 16 to lead the Lady Raiders past Grayson, 56-40.
It wasn’t all easy, though, for the Lady Raiders. North started a bit slow offensively against Grayson. The Lady Raiders found themselves down 10-5 in the first quarter, before Catherine Shope scored seven straight points, six of those from behind the 3-point line, to give the Lady Raiders a 12-10 lead.
Grayson didn’t back down in the first half, jumping out to a 22-15 in the second quarter. Nevertheless, led by stingy defense and a quick offensive attack, the Lady Raiders went on a 10-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Amber Jones to give North a 25-23 lead at the end of the first half.
In the second half, the Lady Raiders pushed their lead to 36-26. Grayson did go on a run to cut the lead in half early fourth quarter, but Cassie Markle and Shope wouldn’t let the lead waste away. Markle scored six of her eight points, in the fourth quarter. Shope scored eight of her 21 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. tonight at Raider Arena in Coal Mountain. NGSL will have updates and videos on Twitter. http://www.twitter.com/ngsportslink
