ALBANY – The Dawson County Lady Tigers (12-17) rallied twice to take a 63-53 road victory over Monroe-Albany (22-5) and advance to the programs third Elite 8 in five seasons. Dawson was paced by Kaylee Sticker’s 22 points and great defensive team play.
After taking a 4-0 lead, Monroe closed the quarter with an 18-7 run and claim the game’s momentum off pressure defense. Monroe pushed their lead to 26-13 in the second quarter. Dawson would chip away at the deficit behind six Cadey Ayers points in the quarter, plus four each from Sticker, Emma Brown and Anna Lowe. Dawson would claim a 30-29 lead inside 90 seconds in the half, but Monroe hit their sixth three-pointer of the half to reclaim a 32-20 halftime lead.
Dawson would eliminate an early third quarter deficit to reclaim the lead 39-38 with 4:20 remaining in the quarter.
The Lady Tigers would build a six point lead in the quarter behind 11 third quarter points by Sticker and another five by Brown and close the quarter with a 48-43 lead.
Monroe would fight back to tie the contest at 53-53 off a bizarre basket on an inadvertent horn at the 4:55 mark. The Lady Tigers would close out the victory with a 10-0 run to advance in the Class AAA tournament by hitting 8 of 10 free throws.
Coach Sweat commented, “We eliminated some first half turnovers and played some really good defense tonight. We made some adjustments and threw some defense that they had not seen before.”
Unofficially, Sticker finished the night with 22 points, Brown with 13, Lowe with 11. Ayers and Abi Chatham finished with six each, Marlie Townley with two and Calli Watson with two.
Dawson will travel to Morgan County for the third round on either February 28 or March 1 for a chance to advance to the Final Four in Savannah. NGSL will have full coverage of the Lady
