CLEVELAND — Turnovers doomed the Lumpkin County Indians Friday night at White County Stadium.

The Warriors cashed those in for 24 points in a 66-14 win over the Indians.

It was a different game early, though, with both teams trading scores in the first quarter. The game was tied at 14-14 early on.

But the Warrior defense had other plans, forcing Lumpkin to punt three straight times. The stellar defensive play was rewarded by its offense. White County, led by freshman QB J. Ben Haynes, the Warriors four consecutive TDs in the first half.

The Warriors scored 45 unanswered second-quarter points to take a commanding 52-14 lead at the half.

It wasn’t all bad for the Indians, though.

Lumpkin (0-1) answered White’s first scoring drive with a 5-play, 80-yard drive, capped by Chandler Woodham’s 27-yard touchdown run with 9:42 left to tie the game, 7-7.

Then late in the first quarter, the Indian defense stepped up to force a Warrior punt. That’s when Woodham went to work, hitting Jonas Ramirez on a 30-yard dart to set up the go-ahead TD. Woodham hit Ramirez again on a 20-yard pass to take a 14-7 lead.

Nevertheless, White County was just getting warmed up, adding 52 unanswered points to knock off the Indians.
