CLEVELAND – The Dawson County Tigers’ (2-2) second half rally was not enough to hold off a slightly more productive White County Warrior (5-1) offense in a 45-42 loss on Friday night. Dawson rolled up 588 yards of total offense, while White compiled 395.
Dawson’s Coey Watson was spot on through the air after missing last week’s West Hall game due to an injury. Watson was 25-44-0 for 332 passing yards including four touchdown passes. Matching Watson’s performance was Sevaughn Clark who rolled up 191 rushing yards on 30 carries. On the receiving end of Watson’s passing attack was Ethan Cameron with 13 catches for 196 yards and two touchdowns.
The Tigers found themselves down 24-7 after the first quarter, but regained their defensive composure to allow the offence to reclaim the lead 34-31 with 9:16 remaining in the game. White would answer with a two fourth quarters scores to build a 45-34 lead. Dawson made the closing minutes interesting with a 30-yard Watson to Wes Hollaway pass with 4:07 remaining in the game. Watson ran in the 2-point PAT to cut the game to the field goal difference. White was able to erase the remaining four game minutes behind the strong rushing by Kaleb Crane (208 all-purpose yards, 3 TDs).
Dawson took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for the first of the Watson-to-Cameron touchdown passes that consumed just over two minutes of the clock.
White took over the game for the remainder of the quarter with 24 unanswered with a Crane rushing and receiving score, a 47-yard field goal, and a J.Ben Hanes to Austin Rowland pass, building the 24-7 score.
Dawson would cut the game to 24-14 with a Robbie Rarick one-yard run with 2:47 in the half.
White’s only score over the second and third quarters would be the opening second half kickoff return for a score to build the 31-14 lead.
The Tiger defense kept the game in check as Dawson would chip away and reclaim the lead. Dawson would score off Watson-to-Cameron’s second score, a Caleb King 47 yard fumble return and a Watson-to-Ryan Glass 4-yard touchdown pass. On the end of that scoring run, Watson would run in his first 2-point PAT to build the 3-point lead.
The Tigers open Region 7AAA play on September 29 against North Hall in Dawsonville.
